Both Melissa (Alley) and Paul initially trained as artists and met twelve
years ago. Paul received a masters degree from the Slade, UCL where he
became interested in psychotherapy and the connection between art and the
subconscious. Melissa's paintings draw upon the collective subconscious and
are influenced by Freudian and Jungian Analysis.
Paul became a passionate
advocate for hypnosis when he stopped smoking with Christine Green six years
ago. Melissa also worked with Christine Green for pain free childbirth and
enjoyed a relatively comfortable home birth for their first son. Paul and
Melissa then went on to train with Dr. Barry Neale who taught them the
Phoenix Technique for stopping smoking. This technique is successful in 95%
of people as shown by follow-up phone calls after six months in a controlled
trial involving 300 people.
They set up Southwark Stop Smoking Practice
because they wanted to help people reduce the risk of cancer since Melissa's
parents both died of cancer and Paul's grandparents died of cancer and heart
disease. (They changed their name to Hypnosis Works to reflect the growing
number of conditions they treat.)
Paul wanted to broaden his practice and studied with Cherith Powell and Greg
Forde at the Atkinson Ball College of Hypnotherapy. He graduated with an
Advanced Diploma in Hypnotherapy and gained a thorough grounding in
different hypnotherapy techniques. He then studied medical hypnosis with
James Poole and gained the skills to create hypnotic anaesthesia with a
client in an operating theatre who had a 15 mm cyst cut out. She had no
chemical anaesthetic and she felt no pain! The client was discharged from
hospital two days early.
Paul and Melissa then trained with Valerie Austin and learnt the Austin
Technique. With Valerie, they learnt a thorough protocol that focuses the
mind of the client to get back control of their life so that they can live
to enjoy a richer and more satisfying life. Melissa has helped clients who
have been in 'therapy' for a number of years to permanently overcome their
problems within five sessions.
Melissa and Paul have set up "LIFE+CARD saving lives
with language". It is a fascinating project that
gives any individual the opportunity to say the right words to a trauma
victim, potentially making the difference between life and death. You
